YA Review and Giveaway: She Smells The Dead by E J Stevens

This. Was. Awesome. I've been a fan of E.J.'s poetry for a while because she writes really cool stuff but she's got a knack for Young Adult books!

She Smells The Dead was new and different and certainly not a premise that I'm familiar with in the world of mediums. I thought it was unique!

I adored the main character Yuki, and her drive to be herself no matter what others thought. I also adored the other "main" character, Calvin. He was a dynamic character and what I would have wanted as a boyfriend at that age.

The story itself was fast paced and never boring. It's a great book in my opinion and I recommend that you check it out.

About The Book:
(from Goodreads)

It's the beginning of senior year and Yuki's psychic awareness of ghostly spirits is threatening to ruin her life. Her ability to sense spirits of the dead isn't glamorous like the ghost hunting on television.

SHE SMELLS THE DEAD.

The smell impressions are becoming stronger. Yuki is being visited in her dreams, and she suspects that her friend Calvin is involved in something strange. To make matters worse her crush on Garrett is going unrequited, Yuki's friend Emma is on a rampage against bee oppression, and annoying Calvin Miller mysteriously disappears.

Will Yuki be able to focus her powers in time to save the lost soul who is haunting her? Meanwhile, who will save Yuki from following the spirits into the light?

  6. Hello all!

    Bethie,
There are plans for at least four books in the
Spirit Guide series. The second book in the series, SPIRIT STORM, is due to release in early 2011.

    Alejandra,
Good question! The idea for She Smells the Dead originally came to me while walking past the graveyard beside my home. I was overwhelmed by a strong smell and suddenly wondered what it would be like to have a psychic connection with spirits of the dead that came in the form of smells, rather than sight or sound.

Wishing everyone luck in the giveaway! :)
    xx,
    E.J.

  14. Debbie,
There are paranormal gifts that run on my mom's side of the family. I sometimes have bits of prescience, but they often come in confusing dreams. My own paranormal experiences, and the experiences of those I have interviewed, influence my writing. :)

    Kathy,
I am currently working on SPIRIT STORM, the second book in the Spirit Guide series, which is due to release in early 2011.

Best of luck with the giveaway!

  17. Ooh..that is rather unique! Mediums aren't the everyday choice for book characters nowadays, so I'd be curious to see how this one turns out. From the sound of it...the unexpected gamble paid off....saying much for the author's writing skills. Count me in on the contest please....and happy reading!

  18. Emily,
The idea for She Smells the Dead originally came to me while walking past the graveyard beside my home. I was overwhelmed by a strong smell and suddenly wondered what it would be like to have a psychic connection with spirits of the dead that came in the form of smells, rather than sight or sound.

Clairalience, the psychic ability to sense the dead through smell, is rarely discussed and, I believe, has never before been the focus of a paranormal series.

Best of luck to all in the giveaway and thank you Kris for hosting on your lovely blog!
