Armchair BEA: How do I balance reviews with other content? Question!

Please check out the question at the bottom and leave some input for me. I'd love to know what you think!

As a lot of you know we non-BEA-attending folks have been participating in http://www.armchairbea.com/. If you haven't checked it out yet you should hop on over there to see all the great posts.

Now Book Blogger Con is also going on in conjunction with BEA this year so we are touching on some of those topics. I'd like to touch on: How do I balance reviews with other content?

I thought this was an interesting topic because I always wonder about it. I only normally participate in one meme...the mailbox one. I post about lots of reviews and giveaways, of course! There's also interviews, guest posts, book features, and the occasional product review.

What I'd like to know from my readers is this...what do YOU like to see on a blog?

  1. This is hard and something I am still working out. My first year was just reviews and then this year is more of a balance. However, I am still working out what works for me....

On that same token, I am the same way about reading blogs. Sometimes I enjoy the meme's but sometimes if I know that is all someone posts...I will skip reading a day or two :)

  2. My blog is so new that I'm still working it out too. I don't have a lot of connections yet. (I do have two author interview scheduled that I am very excited about!) As for giveaways, I try to host some of my own on a regular basis. I think Memes are fine in moderation. I usually do one or two a week, usually different ones each week. I like reading other blogs' mailbox posts the best. As for reviews, I would love to post two a week, but even that can be difficult because I'm not a fast reader (or review writer)!!

  3. I rotate my memes so that I don't have too many. And, it makes my content more diverse!

  4. I've been hesitant to participate in memes. I look for reviews. I tend to skip the meme posts that show up in my reader. I'm beginning to realize that I'm not in the norm. From reading these posts it seems that readers want more a variety. It's a tough call.

  5. I try to change them up and not let them tie me down. Hopefully, I'm doing a good job.

  6. This is an interesting question. My blog is very new also and I was planning just to do reviews and some author interviews, but perhaps people like blogs they follow to be more varied? Those are the things that interest me, since my blog is about children's books. Perhaps I might also think about having some posts about art in children's books that I review--I was an art history major and enjoy thinking about the design and art in books as well as the content.

  7. You bring up a really good point. I just started my blog so I'm still trying to find a good balance. I like the mailbox meme too just because i love to see what people are reading. i definitely agree with the others though about skipping some blogs that have too many memes.

I haven't gotten to the point where i hosted giveaways and have author interviews, but i always liked reading the interviews and i think that helps balance out your blog.

  9. I struggle with this. I just can't figure out what to post about most of the time and when I do, it takes me so long to put together the post. I want my book blog to be ONLY books or reading or literacy but I don't feel qualified enough to post much about the topics in general.

  10. A little bit of everything, which is exactly what I posted about today! :)

  11. It depends on the blog for me. Some blogs mainly post reviews so I head on over there for their great reviews, some are filled with tons of interesting features and memes so I go there to have a great time, and others have a good balance with just the right amount of variety to keep things entertaining. I guess as long as the blog keeps me amused, I'm happy, LOL. I'm still finding the right balance with mine. :D

  12. I definitely agree with most people above - I don't tend to read blogs that are "all memes, all the time". I do post memes myself, though I don't do all of them every week. I tend to do IMM almost ever week, simply because that's how often I buy books, and I do a WoW and Friday Find because I love getting word out to people about books that I have found that are absolutely fabulous-looking! But the others, I either do without, or answer if that week's topic resonates with me for some reason or another.
