What’s Next in the Paranormal Craze?

Guest Blog by Roxanne Rhoads

Since the whole Twilight phenomenon has had paranormal books flying off the shelves everyone is trying to get in on the game and figure out what’s going to be next big thing in the supernatural line up.

Werewolves and other were-creatures came in second after vampires, which they always have. Many love the furry but they have never won the top spot. Poor Wolfman has always played second best to Dracula much like poor Jacob plays second to Edward in Twilight (personally I am on team Jacob- he’s so hawt!).

Then zombies were slated to be the next vampire with a rash of movies and books dedicated to the brainless monsters and a new book recently hit the shelves My Zombie Valentine. Come on, really? A rotting corpse as the next hero hottie? Not in my book. Honestly I can’t see zombies being as popular as vampires…ever.

A whole lot of other supes (supernatural types) are being tossed into books from witches to demons to fairies and now…Angels.

It’s all over the place, angels are the new vampires. Hmmm…I admit angels have their appeal but I really can’t see them having the same charisma or seduction factor. Plus they are so wrapped up in religious connotations that may make some people squirm. Seriously who wants Angels of God as super sexy characters in a paranormal erotica book?

I think J.R. Ward might have started the angel thing tossing that sparkling angel guy into her Black Dagger Brotherhood series then starting a whole new series solely about angels. Now two new books are hitting the shelves including and Falling, fly by Skyler White and Angelology by Danielle Trussoni and there’s a handful more angel books out there ready to read.

But are they the new vampires? Will they take over the top spot? Not likely. Of course I am a diehard vampire fan from way back. While I love paranormal characters of many flavors vampires will always have my heart and be in my top spot.

What about you? Which supernatural creature is your all time favorite?

Big thank you to Roxanne for jopining us today. I personally...have started to become a fan of the whole fallen angel thing, BUT I always love a good vampire!

You can check out more with the author at her blogs. I love 'em!

  1. crickets....hello...anyone out there?

  2. Great post. I have to say that Weres are the best. I am getting burnt out with everything being vampires lately and not into zombies at all.

  3. I really like faries and ghosts!

  4. My favorite depends on the series I'm reading. The paranormal background to these characters change within the worlds the author creates. At the moment it's vamps, but will be wares in short order for me. Oh, and I better not leave out the fae. :)

I'm with you tho... I just can't see a true zombie as a romantic character. :P

  5. Vampires will always be my standby, but I say bring on the unusual shifters. (I especially like the idea of folks shifting into domestic cats.) And I love Nicole Peeler's half-selkie Jane True!

  6. I have to say vampires just because Lestat was my first paranormal anything. Recently, I think they have become overdone somewhat. I'm always a fan of taking the old myth and turning it into something new. I love new ideas and creativity.

I have to agree on the angels, though. I think there is a bunch of religious stuff that could get tied in, but many authors have pulled it off well (reading Archangel's Kiss by Nalini Singh right now!)

  7. I agree though Vampires have been overdone IMHO lately. I like new were/shifters though that are interesting and in a good story.

Angels though? Not sure though I did llike Nalini's Angel books and haven't started JR's Covert yet but hope it is as good as her Blackdagger ones.

If it is new and fresh, then I am willing to give it a try. Sometimes it flies and other times it sucks.

  8. I really like vampires. If the story is good I will like it even if it's shifters, zombies, or weres, etc.

  9. Vampires are it for me. I've tried other paranormal characters but I just don't like them as well. Give me my vamps! A good story, though, regardless of characters, will also win with me.

  10. Vampires all the way. I think the whole zombie as romantic hero thing stinks (no pun intended). Zombies are scary & should remain the bad guy. I can go with just about anything else as long as it's well written & doesn't stray TOO far from traditions & legends.

  11. I pretty much love all things paranormal- if it has good characters I will read it. That's my main prerequisite.

I have enjoyed some angel stories (Skyler White's new book depicts fallen angels as vampires so that's a unique twist). I even went through an angel phase in the 90s but my heart remains with vamps though a hot, animalistic and intense shifter story is welcome too.

BTW I am offering US shipping on the book, Kris asked me that earlier...I forgot to include that in my post.

  12. As long as it's believeable, I'd probably go for it, except for zombies!! Now, I just tried to read a book where 1 person turned into a "flock" of ravens! Put that one right down. That just didn't make sense to me.

  13. I'm still loving the vampires. Shifters are running a close second. Not into zombies at all.

  14. Vampires all the way for me!

  15. I love vamps and shifters and fallen angels im still partial to demons and such tho vamps havebeen over done lately i still like all of them

  16. I love almost all paranormal. I have a collection of all different kinds but my favorite has to be weres non-specified.

  17. My favorite tends to be whatever I'm reading at the time (if the book is good). I agree with the others that I don't think I could ever get into a zombie hero, but I thought that about demons too until I read Gena Showalter & Larissa Ione....yum!!

  18. I love reading about fairies and fallen angels.

  19. I'd have to say vampires!!!

  20. I love to read about vampires. Don't include me in the contest as I already own it. It was very good.
